Core & Fringe Vocabulary

There are two types of vocabulary: Core and Fringe.

There are two types of vocabulary:

1. Core vocabulary, or core words, refers to the most commonly or frequently used words.  Core word lists are made up of pronouns, verbs, prepositions, adverbs, etc.  Core words are used across a wide range of environments with a variety of communication partners.

2. Fringe vocabulary, or fringe words, refers to vocabulary that is more specific to a topic, environment, or individual.  Fringe words are not likely to be used across environments.  These words are dependent upon a specific setting with specific communication partners.

There are various core words programs that are commercially available.  Please contact your school Speech-Language Pathologist for more information on the core words program that is being used by your child.
